Chinatown Move-In

Located next to the front door, this closet had been in use for general storage, while shoes were living in t he back bedroom. In this spacious Village apartment, we were able to put utility and storage items in a rear closet, and utilize this front closet as a place to take off New York shoes upon entry. Also in this closet, to the left, not pictured: winter coats.
This front hall closet was under utilized and needed some keen optimization.
Robust! Shelving and dividers added to give ample space to a lovely collection of knits.
This cedar closet is off to a good start, but it lacks enough shelving and is relying on a hanging section that gentle knits will suffer from with pulled shoulders.
Item types are given distinct and intentional zoning (including a fluffy bed to honor the cat’s favorite spot!)
Well framed sections give a bit of ceremony, a bit of quietude, a clear view
carving out an archive
A twenty year archive, logically stacked with room for more. A new office space and library emerged in the rear of the room, as as well as a large flat storage for art.
A clog, a jam, an overwhelming tangle. Decades of papers, trinkets, wine, furniture, books, and art, all rolled into one jumbo PILE.
Basement stairs often become a holding deck for the task of putting things away. Detangling the basement helped us clear these steps!
Nothing at all!
Part of a larger basement tangle, this zone became quite useful in the finished iteration.
While detangling this basement, a wonderful collection of wine emerged which needed a safe, sensible, and legible home. We carved this section into a functional booze cave!
livingroom / office
1970s mirror, lightweight convertible couch, marble table, rug in pleasant palette, old marble lamp with new shade, thrifted chenille throw
office / living space blended, all seating available for work. A tall Håg Capisco at the window for perching while a low couch and low rocker invite laying on the rugs.
One investment rug, Iran, circa 1890. One thrifted rug for warmth and patternplay. Sliding French doors from Craigslist. Book case from a closed Upper West Side bookstore. Spring-loaded unusual rocking chair thrifted in Vermont.

Multiple work heights, multiple chair types,: multiple shapes of self while working.
a bedroom’s decluttering
In addition to organizing the closet, we made a library up top of the client’s scattered book piles, and hung the little flying pigs to give warmth and height to the space.
Underutilized vertical spaced, unzoned piles, a traffic jam on the rack, transformed into a legible system making good use of all the available space.
Products were all over the place, unfindable when needed. We found a low budget zoning solution with canvas dust bags the client had in stock. Pleasant!
A painting moved, a table changed orientation, and all the clutter on the bed went from permanently floating to being assigned homes in zones within closet and dresser.
Everybody. Needs. A to-do bin. Or two! “To be returned. To be repaired. To be mailed to a friend.” The list goes on – everyone always has something in that in between category, and it all needs a dedicated zone so it doesn’t end up on the kitchen counter, on the desk, etc…
An overflowing scramble of Stuff became a well zoned system with a clear dresser surface.
guestroom revamp
Walls that seemed grim now seem blue. A room that seemed like a small hallway now feels like a cozy nook, with enough room on the ground to stretch.
Underutilized space with unwelcoming feel. It’s hard for people to get a full night’s sleep away from home — help your house guests feel at ease! Click next to see what we changed.
Ratios shifted to give a sense of safe landing. Cooling blues in warm wool make this tiny spare room a place of respite for a travelling visitor.
A guest room used as storage makes your visitor feel like a burden tucked in a cupboard.
plant shop!
Vertical space utilized! Legible holders given to materials in need!
The delightful zeal of caring for plants can often generate a mess.
Sunny Berkeley
These custom shelves sport thoughtfully selected wares, resting gently on display.
taking advantage of the proportions of this raised-level, carpeted, would-be office, a mattress touching three walls turns this small room into a room-bed. White sheets and soft drapes amplify sun bouncing off the neighbor’s stucco garage, framed by all-season Berkeley foliage.
A big living room is nice to have, but not worth it for grad students! They needed to take advantage of this living room’s multi-windowed length to create a third bedroom, rendering their rent affordable.
studio restructure
This client felt overwhelmed by a lack of storage space.
Previously underutilized vertical space is now activated with tall Metro shelving.
A small space with a lot of stuff can be a recipe for a traffic jam
After pruning the clothing collection, we brought in new structural elements to give everything a home. Closet revamps don’t need to cost a lot! One Ikea shelf and a shoe holder made a big difference here.
There are pots with plastic handles living in this oven for storage! Underutilized vertical space is making a major New York situation.
The oven no longer needs to be a storage closet, now that we’ve added little golden hooks to the underside of this shelf for the pots and pans to hang, and mounted a lid holder on the wall by the stove. Take that, NYC!
Chinatown Move-In
Unpacking in a small Chinatown apartment is always a fun sudoku. Here, an afternoon’s shuffle resulted in a comfy living room!
